The Boston Red Sox received some good news regarding outfielder Rusney Castillo.

Castillo, who suffered a strained left oblique in Tuesday’s exhibition game against Boston College, reported to camp Thursday feeling better, according to manager John Farrell. Castillo could resume physical activity as soon as Friday, though he’s still expected to miss at least a week.

“Rusney was much improved today,” Farrell told reporters in Fort Myers before Thursday’s game against the Minnesota Twins. “We’re hopeful to get him into some workouts tomorrow with the elliptical, the stationary bike, and soon after that, depending how he progresses through that activity, to start to get some rotational type of work. After the at-bat the other day, today was certainly improved.”

Castillo tweaked his left side on a swing in Tuesday’s contest. Farrell didn’t sound too optimistic Wednesday, saying Castillo would be sidelined for at least one week, but things now appear to be trending in the right direction.

“Until we get into this a few days, then we’ll get an idea,” Farrell said. “Today was better than anticipated. I don’t want to attach to a calendar. We know as compact and strong as he is, the torque he creates with his swing, this is something we want to be cautious going forward so there are no setbacks.”

Castillo, who signed a seven-year, $72.5 million contract last August, is about to embark on his first full season in the United States.
