Nothing sucks the air out of a miraculous Hail Mary at the end of regulation like a botched coin flip.
The Green Bay Packers forced overtime in their NFC Divisional Playoff against the Arizona Cardinals in improbable fashion after Aaron Rodgers completed a last-second Hail Mary to Jeff Janis. That quickly became an afterthought, though, when Cardinals wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald scored on the first possession of overtime in Arizona’s 26-20 win.
But Fitzgerald’s incredible play only came following an overtime coin flip that went horribly wrong. The coin didn’t actually flip on the referee’s first attempt, so he tossed it again. The Cardinals won the second flip and proceeded to march down the field, win the game and advance to the NFC Championship Game.
WTF? Did another coin flip? pic.twitter.com/xM3o8cKDia
