Baldelli Activated, Bowden Called Up

The Red Sox have called up pitcher Michael Bowden Friday afternoon to add depth to the bullpen.

Also joining the team will be outfielder Rocco Baldelli who is coming off the disabled list after injuring his ankle in batting practice two weeks ago.

Bowden, a starter in Triple-A Pawtucket, will remain in the bullpen for the time being. The 22-year-old righty is 4-6 with a 3.20 ERA in 22 starts this season for the PawSox. He has appeared in one game for Boston already this season, pitching two innings of scoreless relief against the Yankees back on April 26.In 2008, Bowden made one start for the Red Sox and picked up his first MLB win by going five innings and holding the White Sox to just two runs on seven hits in Boston's 8-2 win on Aug. 30.

Baldelli is hitting .261 with five homers and 17 RBIs in 44 games for the Red Sox this summer.

Outfielder Brian Anderson was optioned to Pawtucket while pitcher Fernando Cabrera was designated for assignment.
