Terry Francona is going to need a new bench buddy this year, because Brad Mills is moving on to bigger things.
Mills has been chosen as the manager of the Houston Astros. The Herald reported that Mills went to Houston on Tuesday morning for a third interview and was hired shortly thereafter.
Mills has been the bench coach of the Red Sox since 2004, joining his long-time friend Francona. Mills beat out Red Sox coach Tim Bogar for the position in Houston.
In his NESN.com mailbag on Monday, Francona discussed both Mills and Bogar.
“I hope one of them gets the job, but if they do, they will really be missed,” he wrote. “I think it speaks highly of our organization that people from our front office and coaching staff continue to be sought after for key jobs in our industry.”
