The adventures of Americans into international soccer have been tales of highs and lows. For Liverpool FC owner Tom Hicks and his son, it has been an ultimate low.
Tom Hicks Jr. was forced to resign from his position as director of the club following an e-mail tirade against a fan. Liverpool supporter Stephen Horner wrote to Hicks Jr. to question the amount of funds available to purchase new players.
According to ESPNSoccernet.com, the first response from the now deposed director called Horner an “idiot,” while the second allowed Hicks Jr. to unleash his best Jim Calhoun impersonation, writing, among other things, "Go to hell. I'm sick of you."
Hicks Jr. apologized and announced he was leaving, adding he did not want his “actions to take away from the club's future.” Club supporters had already cried out for his resignation in the previous weeks.
Tom Hicks’ purchase of the club with George Gillett in 2007 has caused uproar from the Liverpool faithful. Hicks, also the owner of the MLB’s Texas Rangers and NHL’s Dallas Stars, had a similarly unsuccessful attempt at soccer ownership after a 1999 purchase of Brazilian club Corinthians saw the team’s colors changed and the club relegated to a lower division.
