Though the Red Sox' starting rotation may be rather crowded heading into spring training, the team may not be satisfied. According to WEEI.com, the Red Sox are interested in Cuban pitcher Yuniesky Maya.

Terrenodepelota.com reported that Larry Luchhino was close to signing Maya, though WEEI.com said the Red Sox were still in preliminary stages of negotiation. Terrenodepelota.com also said the Red Sox have interest in first baseman Jose Julio Ruiz, a 25-year-old who is also from Cuba.

Maya went 0-1 with a 1.23 ERA and 0.950 WHIP in 7 1/3 innings in the 2009 World Baseball Classic for Cuba. He has been linked to numerous teams this winter, including the Mets, White Sox, Rangers, Rays, Yankees and Rockies.

He is projected to be a fourth or fifth starter in the majors, though he would likely start in the minors.
