The third National Invitation Tournament title has been the hardest to reach for the Dayton men's basketball program.
The Flyers, playing in their 22nd
NIT (second only to St. John's for the most of any program), are seeking their third title and first since 1968.
Standing in their way of that third title is North Carolina, as the Tar Heels take on the Flyers on Thursday night at Madison Square Garden in New York City.
"Some great teams have played in [the NIT]," Dayton coach Brian Gregory told The Associated Press. "Some great teams have made it to the finals and some great teams
have won the championship. It's really neat that these guys, as
underclassmen and our seniors, will get an opportunity to play in the
championship game and add another really nice chapter to our history."
The Flyers topped Mississippi 68-63 in the first game of Tuesday night's Final Four doubleheader, while the Tar Heels fended off Rhode Island
68-67 in overtime.
