Orioles’ Felix Pie Could Miss Three Months With Injury

The Orioles will be without left fielder Felix Pie for up to three months.

MASN's Roch Kubatko says that Pie, who was placed on the disabled list April 16 with a strained muscle in his upper back, instead has a more serious injury. Instead of a simple strain, it appears that the latissimus dorsi muscle has separated from the bone.

The 25-year-old was informed of the diagnosis around noon Monday after an MRI.

Andy MacPhail, Baltimore's president of baseball operations, says that the injury will take time to heal and surgery is not recommended.

"Left alone, I'm told — and they have significant medical information on this — the thing will heal itself as quickly or more quickly than if you did something on a surgical basis," MacPhail said.

Pie opened the season as the O's starting left fielder and had a .400 batting average, one home run and two doubles in eight games. He was acquired from the Chicago Cubs prior to the 2009 season and was one of the top prospects in the game from 2003-2007 according to Baseball America.

The Orioles will go with a time-share in left with Luke Scott, Nolan Reimold and call-up Lou Montanez all playing. Scott and Reimold will also see time at first base and designated hitter.
