BOSTON — Mike Lowell will be the designated hitter against left-hander Francisco Liriano when the Red Sox host the Minnesota Twins on Thursday night.

Lowell will bat fifth and fill the DH spot for the ninth time this season. He is 9-for-23 (.281) in that role and is 3-for-5 in his career against Liriano.

Lowell is in the middle of a Boston lineup which has been shuffled around dramatically to account for another injury, this time the elbow ailment of shortstop Marco Scutaro.

According to reports, Scutaro took a cortisone shot in his left elbow. Angel Sanchez was selected from Triple-A Pawtucket earlier Thursday and will start at shortstop in place of Scutaro, batting ninth. Darnell McDonald will bat in Scutaro's customary leadoff spot.

Here is the complete Red Sox lineup:

Darnell McDonald, CF
Dustin Pedroia, 2B
Victor Martinez, C
Kevin Youkilis, 1B
Mike Lowell, DH
Adrian Beltre, 3B
J.D. Drew, RF
Bill Hall, LF
Angel Sanchez, SS
