Report: Red Sox Claim Johnny Damon Off Waivers From Detroit Tigers
Johnny Damon may soon find himself back in a Red Sox uniform.
Boston claimed the Detroit Tigers’ outfielder off waivers Monday, reports MLBTradeRumors.
Damon is owed $1.8 million of his $8 million salary for the remainder of the season, and the Tigers would happily rid themselves of that commitment since they have fallen out of playoff contention.
The Sox may have claimed Damon so as to prevent the Rays or Yankees from making a claim, but they could certainly use their former player with Mike Cameron, Eric Patterson and Jacoby Ellsbury on the DL. Damon, though, does have a no-trade clause, and he has indicated that he may not want to go back to Boston, says Fanhouse.
The Tigers may simply release Damon if no deal with Boston can be worked out, reports Jon Heyman.
Damon surpassed 2,500 career hits this season and has been batting .270 for the Tigers.
