Report: Red Sox Place Mike Lowell on Waivers

Mike Lowell's future with the Red Sox has been uncertain all season long, so it should come as no surprise that the team placed him on waivers Wednesday, ESPN.com reports.

The Red Sox have tried to trade Lowell on multiple occasions, even if it meant sending the injury-plagued infielder to the Yankees.  However, injury concerns surrounding the four-time All-Star have forced most teams to shy away.

The decision to place Lowell on waivers does not necessarily mean that he will be heading to another team in the near future, but it could potentially be the first step toward facilitating a trade at some point this month.

It is unlikely that the 36-year-old will be claimed by any team off waivers due to the money that he is owed for the rest of the season. According to MLBTradeRumors.com, $3.9 million remains on Lowell’s 2010 contract, which is a hefty sum to pay for an aging corner infielder who continues to struggle with hip issues.

If no team claims Lowell, as expected, the Red Sox will then have the option to trade him. The Yankees, Rangers, Angels, Twins, Tigers and Blue Jays are among the teams who have reportedly expressed interest in Lowell at one point or another this season.

With Kevin Youkilis now out for the season, though, the Red Sox may elect to hang on to Lowell as they continue to explore replacement options.

Lowell was batting .214 with three home runs and 14 RBIs in 84 at-bats heading into Thursday's game.
