Black Eyed Peas Could Mark Long Overdue Change in Super Bowl Halftime Performers

Last February, when Pete Townshend and Roger Daltrey played some classic tracks at halftime of the Super Bowl, most football fans under the age of 40 weren't exactly rocking out in their living rooms.

Next February, it could be different, as the Black Eyed Peas have reportedly been picked to perform at halftime of the Super Bowl.

It seems plausible because, as SportsbyBrooks notes, the Black Eyed Peas have been involved with NFL events in the past, performing in a 2005 Super Bowl pregame concert and the 2009 NFL Kickoff Concert.

If the report turns out to be true, it will mark a sharp change in direction from the past six years, which featured older, more conservative acts like Tom Petty, Paul McCartney, Bruce Springsteen and The Rolling Stones (Prince was in there too, but he was pushing 50 years old and was hardly his controversial former self).

The tameness of those acts were no mistake, as they followed the forever-infamous wardrobe malfunction of Janet Jackson at halftime in February 2004. That show also featured younger performers like Justin Timberlake, P. Diddy, Nelly and Kid Rock.

Though the Black Eyed Peas may not be appealing to many die-hard football fans, most fans will likely agree that it will be nice to usher out the senior rock tour and welcome in some fresh blood.
