Report: Liverpool Interested in Bolton Defender Gary Cahill as Long-Term Jamie Carragher Replacement

Given their debt issues, Bolton Wanderers have been rumored to be willing to sell star defender Gary Cahill for quite some time.

With Jamie Carragher out until March, that could happen sooner than expected. While a host of big clubs including Arsenal, Manchester United and Inter have been tipped as interested in the 24-year-old English international, Liverpool may now be the most interested of all in the wake of the 32-year-old Carragher’s injury.

Cahill made his first appearance for England in 2010 and he has been an integral part of the Trotters’ Cinderella season — which has seen them improve to fifth from last year’s 14th place finish, having incurred the second-fewest losses in the league.

While he is rated at $19 million (12 million pounds), Arsenal is set to bid just $16 million (10 million pounds), according to the Mail on Sunday.

Bolton boss Owen Coyle, however, has placed a much higher price tag on his prized asset.

“If someone comes in with £25 million, any football club would have to look at that,” he said.

The signing would be a coup for Liverpool, bringing a proven, young, class center-back to a team that has injury issues and a relative lack of depth at the position.
