The marriage between the Red Sox and Max Ramirez may simply not be destined to take place.

The catcher was claimed Monday by the Chicago Cubs, ending his tenure as a member of the Red Sox organization after just five days, according to ESPN.com.

Ramirez, 26, was the key piece in the trade between the Rangers and Red Sox last year that would have sent Mike Lowell to Texas, if not for the veteran's damaged thumb. The Sox appeared to have gotten their man at last when they claimed Ramirez off waivers from Texas last Wednesday.

Less than a week later, though, Ramirez was claimed by the Cubs after the Sox put him on waivers.

It's interesting that a player who isn't all that young and isn't all that productive (he hit .296 and slugged .381 in 56 games in Triple-A last year) has gotten the amount of attention that Ramirez has over the past year, but that's not necessarily anything new for him. He was traded by the Braves to the Indians in 2006 for Bob Wickman, and he was traded the following year to the Rangers to facilitate Kenny Lofton's Cleveland homecoming.

In 115 major league at-bats, Ramirez has batted .217 with four doubles, four homers and 17 RBIs.
