The term “pitchers and catchers report” usually signals the true start of the baseball season. For most teams, including the Red Sox, it can be loosely interpreted.
When Mike Lowell has a retirement party across the state the night before, that can make for a quiet camp, as was the case Sunday in Fort Myers, where the club’s player development complex was rather sparsely settled.
Lowell spent Saturday night in Miami Beach and several current members of the Red Sox made the trip. It left the camp rather quiet the following morning, with just a few pitchers and catchers seen doing any activity.
Daisuke Matsuzaka and Hideki Okajima both threw a bit. Dan Wheeler and Michael Bowden jogged together. Minor leaguers Kyle Weiland and Alex Wilson had a game of catch. Clay Buchholz, Jonathan Papelbon and Bobby Jenks were around. Jarrod Saltalamacchia was seen letting the clubhouse dog, Bruiser, out for a stroll. Tim Wakefield cruised in around 1 p.m.
Monday is scheduled to include some physicals and light workouts. The first full workout for pitchers and catchers is set for Tuesday.
Lowell, who turns 37 later this month, retired last year after 13 seasons in the major leagues, the last five of which came with Boston. He was honored at Fenway Park in a ceremony on the final weekend of the season.
