"We don't have a term sheet signed," Boggs said in an interview with FoxSports.com's Jon Paul Morosi. "There's nothing agreed to right now, but I fully expect we'll start moving in a positive direction again in the near future.
"There is a mutual understanding of where our bottom line is. We're going to try to pick up where we left off in December."
Boggs told FoxSports.com that he'll be traveling to Fort Myers, Fla., next week to "touch base" with Red Sox general manager Theo Epestein. He said the team first wanted to see that Gonzalez was fully healed from his offseason shoulder surgery before committing to a long-term extension.
Boggs said that no deal is necessarily imminent, but he is confident the two sides can work out a deal.
"Adrian wants to be a Boston Red Sox for the long term, and I would anticipate that's going to happen," Boggs told the site. "It's a possibility that we'll resume talks next week, but this isn't something where we have an immediate timeline as a goal."
Gonzalez has appeared in two spring training games thus far, going 2-for-4 with a sacrifice fly.
