Editor's note: NESN.com is teaming up with WhatIfSports.com to crown the greatest Red Sox team of all time with the "Red Sox Showdown for the Ages." Click here for more information on the 16-team simulation tournament.
Before the "Red Sox Showdown for the Ages" can begin, the final two teams in the bracket must be filled. One of the teams up for those final two spots is the 1990 team.
1990 Boston Red Sox
Record: 88-74
Finish: 1st in AL East, Lost in ALCS to Oakland
Manager: Joe Morgan
Best Player: Ellis Burks (.296 average, 21 home runs, 89 RBIs)
Best Pitcher: Roger Clemens (21-6, 1.93 ERA, 209 K's
Breakdown: Roger Clemens had a lot of good seasons in a Red Sox uniform, and his 1990 campaign is right up there with the best. The Rocket went 21-6 with a razor-thin 1.93 ERA, but finished second in Cy Young voting to Oakland's Bob Welch. Conicidentally, it was Welch's A's team that knocked Clemens and the Sox from the 1990 ALCS, before Tony La Russa's club was steamrolled in the '90 World Series by the Reds.
You can click here to vote on which two teams will be added to the bracket. Voting closes on June 13, and the opening round results will then be revealed on June 20.
