Justin Masterson Helps Teammate Jack Hannahan Fly Home to See Son’s Premature Birth

Justin Masterson is a great pitcher. When he's not pitching and helping the Indians win, though, he's always there to help his teammates out, like he did with Indians third baseman Jack Hannahan.

When the Indians were in Boston, Hannahan's wife was going into labor — prematurely, the Pioneer Press reports. Hannahan wanted to go home to be with her, but the only option was a private jet, which Hannahan knew he couldn't afford.

Masterson asked Hannahan what was wrong, and told him to book the flight. As CBSSports' Trent Rosencrans reports, the jet cost $35,000, roughly seven percent of Hannahan's annual salary. Hannahan told Masterson the flight was too expensive, but Masterson still told Hannahan to book it.

To alleviate any financial repercussions the cost might have on Hannahan, Masterson passed around a hat in the clubhouse, where his teammates pulled together $35,000 to pay for the ticket.

Hannahan booked the ticket, flew to Cleveland and, 15 minutes after Hannahan arrived at the hospital, his wife gave birth.
