Report: Disgruntled Osi Umenyiora Given Permission by Giants to Seek Trade

The New York Giants have given agent Tony Agnone permission to seek a trade for defensive end Osi Umenyiora, according to ESPN's Sal Paolantonio.

The 29-year-old pass rusher has been feuding with New York general manager Jerry Reese over a new contract, which the club has thus far refused to grant. Umenyiora insists Reese had promised him a new deal would be offered when the pair spoke in 2008, and went so far as to file an affadavit regarding the claim.

Umenyiora was a no-show on the first day of Giants training camp on Friday but did finally report on Saturday evening. The 6-foot-3 All-Pro met with Reese and head coach Tom Coughlin on Sunday, but has yet to participate in practice.

The front office has allowed Umenyiora and his agent to look into trade possibilities, telling the eight-year veteran the team expects a first round pick in return.

Reese was mum when asked about the conversation he had with the disgruntled defensive end.

"Osi and I had a very good conversation and really that is all I am going to say about that," he said Monday morning in an interview with radio station WFAN in New York. "There are still some ongoing issues involved with that."

Umenyiora has 60 sacks and 28 forced fumbles in seven seasons in the league. After winning a Super Bowl with New York in 2008, the former second round pick missed the following season with a torn lateral meniscus. In the two seasons since his injury Umenyiora has 77 tackles, 18.5 sacks and 14 forced fumbles, including an NFL record 10 last season.

While there are a number of teams who could use the pass rusher, Reese said the team will not rush to make a decision on a trade.

"We'll do what's best for the New York Giants," Reese said. "I don't have any comments about Osi until we get all the issues resolved."
