The Argentine netted Liverpool's only goal in Monday's 1-1 draw against Blackburn Rovers. In the 53rd minute, he was standing at the far post when Martin Skrtel sent a deftly volleyed cross his way. He rose and headed it past Blackburn goalkeeper Mark Bunn to tie the game.
It was a product of focus and finely tuned instincts in front of goal. Blackburn failed to clear a delivery into the area. Defender Christopher Samba's header fell to Skrtel at the near post. The LFC defender took no time to send his pass across the face of goal, and Maxi seemed to be the only player alert to what was happening at that moment. He was unmarked and scored with ease.
The goal was Maxi's second in Premier League play this season (five appearances and four starts), but it was his fourth in all competitions (nine appearances and eight starts). His tally puts him second on the team, trailing only Luis Suarez, who has eight.
Dating back to his hat-trick against Birmingham last April, he now has scored 11 goals in his last 12 starts in all competitions for Liverpool.
Liverpool's 21 goals in 18 league games is the cause of greatest concern among many associated with the club. It is expected to pursue a striker when the transfer window opens on Jan. 1, but LFC might just have an in-house solution to its goal scoring woes.
