Mathieu has expressed interest in sitting out this season and returning in 2013 if things can be worked out with the school, according to ESPN.com.
It's unclear at this time whether Mathieu would be eligible to return to the team next year, as there are currently conflicting reports regarding such.
Head coach Les Miles dismissed the Heisman Trophy finalist from the team on Friday following failed substance-abuse tests. Mathieu is still enrolled at the university for the time being, though, and ESPN.com reports that the possibility of reinstatement is at least being discussed, although it would have to be approved at a number of levels.
Jim Kleinpeter of The Times-Picayune reports, however, that returning isn't an option, and that McNeese State, which Mathieu visited on Friday, is presently the only option for transfer.
According to Kleinpeter, Mathieu will make a decision on transferring by Wednesday.
