NBC anchor Bob Costas has battled what looks like a nasty case of pink eye for the first few days of the network’s Olympics coverage, and the “TODAY” show announced Tuesday that Costas has been sidelined. Matt Lauer will replace him on the anchor desk.
Costas’ increasingly red eyes have been fodder for social media jokesters, but he seems to be taking it with a good sense of humor. Costas was on set with Mary Carillo during NBC’s “Olympics Late Night” coverage Monday night, and after Carillo’s package on vodka production in Russia aired, Costas was prepared with two glasses of the libation.
Costas proposed a toast before the two threw back their shots, saying, “I’m looking at it this way — my eyes can’t get any redder no matter what I do.”
