The adage “patience is a virtue” is one that can surprisingly be applied to business decisions in the NFL.
Despite the fact that armchair NFL owners out there might not have made the same decision, the Miami Dolphins announced Sunday that head coach Joe Philbin would return for a fourth season. Philbin is 23-24 in three seasons as the Fins’ head coach, and while it might seem crazy on the surface to bring him back, there’s a method to the madness, according to a post by NFL linebacker Matt Chatham on FootballByFootball.com.
Chatham has seen a similar situation play out firsthand. He was on the 2000 New England Patriots squad that finished the season at 5-11 under Bill Belichick, and the Pats’ patience was rewarded when Belichick was able to take the 2001 team from a 1-3 start all the way to a Super Bowl win.
Chatham also stressed how important it is to see the bigger picture when making important business decisions in the NFL.
