Pedro Martinez’s name was just added to a very prestigious list.
The Boston chapter of the Baseball Writers Association of America announced Monday that the former Boston Red Sox ace is the recipient of 2014’s Judge Emil Fuchs Memorial Award. The award, which honors the man who owned the Boston Braves from 1923 to 1935, is presented annually “for long and meritorious service to baseball.”
Martinez pitched for Boston from 1998 through 2004 and currently is a special assistant to Red Sox general manager Ben Cherington. After an 18-year career, Martinez has the third highest strikeout rate in MLB history.
The Fuchs Memorial Award isn’t limited to people with a connection to Boston, but many past recipients do have one, like Red Sox great Carl Yastrzemski and former manager Terry Francona. Martinez will receive his award at the Boston BBWAA dinner on Jan. 22 at Agganis Arena.
