Reports: Mitchell Boggs, Boston Red Sox Agree To Minor League Contract

No, this isn’t the 1980s. But yes, the Boston Red Sox have added a Boggs.

The Red Sox have agreed to a minor league contract with reliever Mitchell Boggs, a major league source told WEEI.com’s Rob Bradford. The signing was first noted Monday on Twitter by Peter Gammons.

Boggs, who is not related to former Red Sox third baseman Wade Boggs, was a fifth-round draft pick of the St. Louis Cardinals in 2005. The right-hander posted a 3.08 ERA in 190 relief appearances spanning 201 1/3 innings from 2008 through 2010.

Boggs, who turns 31 next month, didn’t pitch in the majors in 2014. He had an 8.29 ERA in 51 innings over 37 appearances split between Triple-A and Rookie ball. The 6-foot-4 hurler last appeared in the majors with the Colorado Rockies in 2013.

Boggs’ best season came in 2012, when he posted a 2.21 ERA and 1.05 WHIP over 78 appearances spanning 73 1/3 innings with the Cards.
