The Carolina Hurricanes and Edmonton Oilers played a hockey game Sunday night that was, by all accounts, unspectacular — except for one play.

The NHL draft lottery hopefuls really don’t have much to play for other than pride in the season’s home stretch, but one of the plays of the season came from their Sunday matchup, thanks to Carolina forward Alexander Semin.

With the Canes trailing 3-0 in the second period, Semin weaved through a few Oilers to get to the net. Semin was tripped up in the crease and fell to the ice. As he was sliding through the crease, Semin was able to get his stick on the puck and just flung it at the net. Somehow, the puck got by Edmonton goalie Richard Bachman.

Semin’s explanation for the play was pretty straightforward.

“The other guy slashed me in my legs and I go down,” Semin said, according to NHL.com. “Just see the puck and turn it. I just shoot for the net. That’s it.”

The goal cut the Oilers’ lead to 3-1 and seemed to spark a comeback for the Canes. Carolina came from behind to win the game 7-4.
