Bafetimbi Gomis gave his family, friends and the soccer world a true fright Wednesday.
Gomis collapsed on the field during Swansea City’s Premier League game against Tottenham Hotspur at White Hart Lane. The Swansea City striker fell face down on the turf through no contact with another player. He needed oxygen and several minutes of treatment before medical personnel stretchered him off the field.
Gomis was said to be conscious and speaking as he was carried deeper into the stadium for further treatment.
“He is fine,” a Swansea City spokesperson said at halftime, according to the Guardian. “He is in the medical room. It is something we have been aware of — it is something called a vasovagal condition. We have always been aware of it and it has happened before. He has had all the medical and cardiology tests with us.”
Swansea City manager Gary Monk made a similar statement after the game.

Gomis, 29, has a history of fainting problems. He fainted three times in 2009 when he played for French club Lyon. Tests revealed no serious threat to Gomis’ health and he continued his playing career.

Gomis’ collapse comes almost three years to the day after Bolton midfielder Fabrice Muamba suffered a heart attack on the field at White Hart Lane. Muamba’s heart stopped beating, but paramedics and Premier League regulations saved his life. Muamba recovered from his March 2012 cardiac arrest but retired immediately from the sport.
