The Boston Red Sox announced their first round of spring training roster cuts Wednesday.
Infielders Sean Coyle and Travis Shaw were optioned to Triple-A Pawtucket before Wednesday’s game against the Minnesota Twins at JetBlue Park in Fort Myers, Fla. Right-handed pitchers Miguel Celestino, Keith Couch and Noe Ramirez, and first baseman/outfielder Bryan LaHair were reassigned to minor league camp.
Coyle and Shaw both were added to the Red Sox’s 40-man roster over the offseason. Celestino, Couch, Ramirez and LaHair all were non-roster invitees.
Coyle appeared in eight Grapefruit League games with Boston this spring. He went 2-for-7 with a double, an RBI and three walks. The 23-year-old second baseman is coming off a strong 2014 season at Double-A Portland in which he displayed more power than his 5-foot-8 frame suggests.
Shaw, who turns 25 in April, made a very strong impression this spring. He went 7-for-20 with a homer and three RBIs in nine Grapefruit League games. While the young corner infielder is without a clear path to the majors, he certainly solidified himself as a prospect to watch this season.
The Red Sox now have 51 players in major league camp. Of those 51 players, 38 are on the 40-man roster and 13 are non-roster invitees.
