Want to go to the Floyd Mayweather-Manny Pacquiao fight but don’t feel like selling everything you own? You might be in luck.
Tickets for the boxers’ Saturday night showdown at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas recently were going for astronomical prices on the secondary market, with some seats costing as much as $350,000 on StubHub. Even a few “cheaper” seats being sold for $87,000 were too rich for the blood of Chrissy Teigen and other celebrities.
Apparently good things come to those who wait. The median ticket price for the bout was $13,152 on SeatGeek on April 24, according to Forbes’ Kurt Badenhausen. But that number has dropped by more than half to a paltry $6,345 as of Friday. To get a sense of how steep that drop-off is, check out the chart below, courtesy of Forbes.
The largest dips appear to have come in the last few days, and that’s true for other secondary ticket markets as well. ESPN’s Darren Rovell reports the average ticket price on StubHub fell nearly $800 from Thursday ($4,693) to Friday ($3,899).
So why the free fall? According to Rovell, the drop can be traced back to the hype surrounding the absurd initial prices, which scared off many potential buyers and resulted in a relatively low number of tickets being purchased.
Of course, tickets to the superfight still will set the record as the most expensive ever, passing the $1,616 median ticket price for Mayweather’s 2013 bout against Saul “Canelo” Alvarez.
But if you don’t want to spend a small fortune to watch Money fight Pac-Man, now is your chance.
