LONDON — Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney appeared to have a laser directed at his face during Wednesday’s Capital One Cup loss to Middlesbrough, and the incident will be investigated by the English Football Association.
Footage from the fourth-round game at Old Trafford shows a green light appearing on Rooney’s face as he prepared to take his kick in the penalty shootout.

Rooney’s kick was saved by Middlesbrough goalkeeper Tomas Mejias, as United was beaten 3-1 on penalties following a 0-0 draw after extra-time.
The FA said Thursday it was aware of reports of the incident and was looking into the matter.
The penalties were taken at the stadium end where around 10,000 visiting Middlesbrough supporters were sitting.
