Think long and hard before you pull the trigger on that Steve Harvey joke. It’s been used. About 12 million times.
The New England Patriots had everyone scratching their heads Sunday when head coach Bill Belichick called for his team to kick off to begin overtime against the New York Jets. Even Patriots special teams captain Matthew Slater, who said after the game he confirmed with Belichick several times before the coin toss, looked perplexed.
The scene was similar to the one that unfolded just one week earlier at the Miss Universe pageant, where actor/comedian/host Steve Harvey initially announced the wrong winner. According to Belichick, the Patriots’ desire was to kick, but one couldn’t help but wonder if they, like Harvey, simply botched the moment.
Nevertheless, the Internet was quick to establish a connection between Harvey’s flub and the Patriots’ mishap, especially after the Jets scored a touchdown on their first overtime possession to secure a 26-20 win over the AFC East champions. The result was plenty of Harvey-related jokes and memes, many of which were hilarious and all of which spoke to the mass confusion at MetLife Stadium.
