Real Madrid must resume its chase for the La Liga (Spanish first division) title without the great Cristiano Ronaldo’s services.
Ronaldo will miss Real Madrid’s league game against Real Sociedad on Saturday at Anoeta Stadium because of a thigh injury. Third-place Real Madrid trails joint leaders Barcelona and Atletico Madrid by one point with just three games remaining in the season. Ronaldo, who has scored 31 goals in 34 games, undoubtedly would have helped Real Madrid’s efforts to overtake its rivals this weekend.
Real Sociedad’s current 12th-place position is a testament to the improvement it has made since it fired David Moyes as manager in November. Real Sociedad was in danger of relegation when Eusebio Sacristan took charge, but its points per game has increased from .3 under Moyes’ 10 games this season to .44 in his successor’s 25 — enough improvement to preserve its top-flight status for another season.
