Report: Patriots Work Out Former Alabama, Saints Safety Vinnie Sunseri

The New England Patriots reportedly continued to kick the tires on free-agent safeties last week.

The Patriots worked out Vinnie Sunsieri last week, ESPN’s Adam Caplan reported Friday. Sunseri was selected in the fifth round of the 2014 NFL Draft by the New Orleans Saints out of Alabama.

The Patriots reportedly also recently worked out former Atlanta Falcons safety William Moore.

Sunseri in nine games during his rookie season, notching five tackles before being placed on injured reserve with an arm injury. He missed the entire 2015 season after tearing his ACL. He also tore his ACL in 2013.

The 6-foot, 210-pound safety ran a 4.56-second 40-yard dash at his pro day in 2014. He recorded 20 tackles with two interceptions and four passes defended in six games at Alabama in 2013. He was also a special-teams standout in college.

The Patriots are at the 90-man limit on their roster, but they could afford to add another safety before organized team activities. They currently have Devin McCourty, Patrick Chung, Duron Harmon, Jordan Richards, Nate Ebner, Brock Vereen and Cedric Thornton on their safety depth chart. They also have Brandon King and Kamu Grugier-Hill, who are safety/linebacker hybrids.

Ebner currently is on leave from the team to try out for the U.S. Olympic rugby team.
