Marco Hernandez made his Major League Baseball debut just two months ago, but he almost had to take on a new position already.
After Ryan Hanigan and Blake Swihart were injured during the Boston Red Sox’s game against the Toronto Blue Jays on Saturday, the 23-year-old infielder was designated as the emergency catcher in the event Christian Vazquez went down, too. Red Sox manager John Farrell told reporters Sunday that Hernandez was “getting a crash course behind the dugout” in case he had to catch Craig Kimbrel’s 100 mph fastball.
