Rob Ryan Might Have Been Robbed If Not For Alleged Plotters’ Stupid Mistake

A basic planning error prevented Rob Ryan from becoming a statistic and potential robbers from enshrinement in the Criminal Hall of Fame.

Suspected criminals targeted the Buffalo Bills defensive coordinator for robbery last year, The New Orleans Advocate’s Ramon Antonio Vargas reported Wednesday, citing court documents. They intended to hold up Ryan, who was in charge of the New Orleans Saints at the time, but their plot unraveled when one of them called the wrong number 11 times over the course of a weekend and left a voicemail that detailed the plan.

“He don’t got no security,” the voicemail said, according to a court document obtained. “He’s just a regular football coach. … He ain’t … big … like (rapper) Lil Wayne or nobody … that got bodyguards everywhere.”

While it’s true Ryan wasn’t the biggest name in New Orleans at the time, he did have at least one law-abiding citizen on his side. That was a federal worker, who turned over the 2-minute, 16-second voicemail to authorities.

Police stationed themselves near Ryan’s home and also tied the plot against him to an ongoing investigation of a string of crimes in New Orleans’ Uptown district. Police eventually linked the number to two suspects, who since have been jailed on suspicion of a number of charges (unrelated to Ryan plot), including armed robbery, conspiracy to commit armed robbery and attempted murder.

Some crimes solve themselves and don’t need a world-class defense to thwart. This simply is one example.
