If you haven’t watched the Ryder Cup, then you’ve missed some clever trash-talking between Team Europe and the rowdy American fans at Hazeltine National Golf Club.
To be fair, the away squad at the Ryder Cup always must deal with a bit of trolling from the home fans, but this weekend in Chaska, Minn., it might be the most we’ve ever seen.
American fans have been all over the European players, especially Rory McIlroy and their favorite punching bag, Sergio Garcia. Some of it has been in good fun, but a few people have taken things way too far.
McIlroy quieted the gallery Friday when he was a part of Europe’s comeback after a disastrous morning session, and he punctuated his round with a bow. On Saturday, the fans started singing “Sweet Caroline” at McIlroy, which was an obvious attempt to rattle him over his ex-fiancée, tennis star Caroline Wozniacki. But McIlroy instead responded in brilliant fashion.
Crowd serenading Rory with "Sweet Caroline bomp, bomp, bomp …" he turned around and screamed the rest of the verse to them. Lit.

US fans: Hahaha, Rory! We are singing Sweet Caroline to you!
Rory: Great! Let me sing along while I step on your team's neck with birdies.

While that falls under the all-in-good-fun category, especially because of McIlroy’s response, some fans took things way too far by shouting some pretty disgusting stuff at him.

Rory McIlroy confronts fan, says to remove him. No physical contact. Marshal tells me fan to be removed immediately. pic.twitter.com/namR3844jX

Fans getting brutal out here. After 7th green, some idiot yelled "Suck a d—, Rory!" right in his face. He grabbed security had him tossed.

If anything, those insults have only fueled McIlroy and Team Europe, as they have clawed their way back into contention.
