NFL Rumors: Giants Confident In Eli Manning, Open To Offers For No. 2 Pick

The New York Giants appear to be invested — or at least confident — in Eli Manning for the long haul.

However long that may be.

After a horrid 3-13 season, the Giants own the No. 2 pick in this year’s NFL draft, but they reportedly are willing to hold on to that pick due in part to confidence in Manning.

Pat Shurmur, the Giants new head coach, told ESPN on Wednesday that he believes Manning has “years left as a starting quarterback in this league.”

And on a certainly related note, new general manager Dave Gettleman didn’t exactly sound like a man cornering himself into hanging the phone up on anyone inquiring about the second overall pick.

“Are we open for business? You know, whatever. Any decision I make is going to be in the best interest of the New York Football Giants. Plain and simple,” Gettleman told ESPN. “So if someone makes me an offer I can’t refuse, would I move back? Depends on who is there.

“Again, if there is a guy worthy of being the second pick of the draft and what we’re basically saying and answering that question to the affirmative, you’re drafting what you think is going to be a Hall of Fame player. So you can’t get too cute about that thing.”

This past season may have been the most chaotic of Manning’s career, who has brought a pair of Lombardi Trophies back to New York. During the season, then-head coach Ben McAdoo benched Manning in favor of Geno Smith, in turn ending a starts streak that spanned 210 games.

Manning is 37 years old, so it’s anyone’s guess as to how much he has left in the tank. But as the Giants weigh their options, it sounds like they have some level of peace if Manning is, in fact, the one taking snaps come Week 1.
