Washington upset Tampa Bay to advance

The Washington Commanders visit the Detroit Lions in the 2024 NFC Divisional round on Saturday night.

Detroit, the No. 1 seed and NFC North champion, finished the regular season with a 15-2 record, while No. 6 Washington went 12-5.

Washington is 3-0 against Detroit in the playoffs. The Lions and Commanders last met in the playoffs in the 1999 season, with Washington defeating Detroit 27-13. The previous times they played in the postseason, 1982 and 1991, Washington went on to win the Super Bowl. All three previous contests took place in Washington.

The Commanders are coming off their first playoff win in 19 years after a wild-card upset against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and are the only non-division winner to advance to the second round of the playoffs.

The Lions, who enjoyed a well-deserved week off, fell one game short of their first Super Bowl last season when they lost the NFC Conference championship to the San Francisco 49ers.
