Ex-Patriots Weapon Explains Why Josh McDaniels Works As OC

Sammy Morris played under McDaniels for two seasons

The Patriots have brought aboard two familiar faces to the coaching staff in Mike Vrabel and Josh McDaniels.

Sammy Morris has a unique point of view regarding both, having played alongside the former and for the latter during his four-season stint with New England. Morris is now the assistant director of player support and development at Texas Tech.

NESN’s George Balekji and Travis Thomas welcomed him onto Wednesday’s episode of “Foxboro Rush to talk about the recent hirings and explain why they’ll work.

Morris also dove into why things haven’t worked out for McDaniels during his head coaching stops with the Denver Broncos and Las Vegas Raiders.

“It’s really as simple as, some guys are coordinators,” Morris said. “You might think that’s a slight to them, but it is what it is… The head coach has to be a facilitator, a people person — there’s more to it than just calling plays. If you’re a head coach who isn’t calling plays, you’re going from the reason you got hired to not even doing it anymore.”
