The Boston Red Sox are viewed as the favorite to sign Alex Bregman, but another suitor might be shifting their focus on the All-Star.
Bregman’s market took a turn this week when the Astros reportedly re-opened talks with the 30-year-old. Houston also reportedly tried to trade closer Ryan Pressly, who has a no-trade clause and can control where he wants to go.
The Detroit Tigers reportedly made Bregman their “top priority.” However, A.J. Hinch’s side also reportedly wants to add a high-end reliever. That’s why they’ve been in talks with the Astros for Pressly, but they didn’t seem to last long.
“It’s the Cubs as closer or just late-inning reliever for the Astros for Ryan Pressly. It’s his choice,” USA Today’s Bob Nightengale posted on X on Friday. “Tigers are out.”
Chicago also was listed as a suitor for Bregman, but they could be out if Pressly agrees to join it. Detroit might be back in the running for the two-time World Series champion if it is out on Pressly.

That adds more competition and pressure on the Red Sox to get something done with Bregman if they want him. The Gold Glove infielder’s market could start heating up if Pressly is dealt with, and a move could be made quickly between all the suitors.
