There is a reason why nearly everyone is salivating over Boston Red Sox prospect Roman Anthony.

The 20-year-old outfielder is one of the top prospects in all of baseball, ranking second on Baseball America’s top 100 list only behind Roki Sasaki and first on Keith Law’s top 100 prospect list, which was released Monday.

But for Anthony, who is on the precipice of reaching the big leagues, what exactly is his ceiling? Law’s prediction of what that might be will only make the salivation over Anthony grow stronger.

“He’s got a chance to be a 30-homer, high-average, high-OBP guy in right field, maybe with plus defense there, which is a ‘best player in the league’ profile,” Law wrote.

That’s certainly some major praise for Anthony and it is warranted after what he displayed in the Red Sox farm system in 2024.

Anthony performed well with Double-A Portland — .269 batting average with 15 home runs and 45 RBIs — and then took it up a notch in 35 games with Triple-A Worcester. The talented left-handed hitter batted a sterling .344 with three home runs and 20 RBIs. He also walked (31) as many times as he struck out.

“His average exit velocity for Triple-A Worcester was 88 mph, although he did start to hit the ball on the ground more (52 percent) in that brief stint, not a major concern but something to watch as he gets so close to a promotion to the majors,” Law wrote. “He’s very disciplined for his age, chasing just 20 percent of the time in Triple-A, with a whiff rate under 9 percent, picking up spin very well even at a level when he was facing guys who’d pitched in the majors.”

It’s unclear if Anthony will start the season with the Red Sox, but if he doesn’t, it feels like it won’t be long until he’s in the majors.

All signs point to Anthony being a very productive future big leaguer. And perhaps an MVP award, or a few, could be on their way to Anthony, too.

That would be quite the home run for the Red Sox.
