The Red Sox reportedly added some infield depth Tuesday.
Abraham Toro agreed to a minor league contract with Boston, according to Daniel Alvarez Montes of El Extra Base — which includes an invitation to major league spring training. Toro himself confirmed the news on Instagram.
The 28-year-old bounced around the league over the last several seasons, spending time with the Houston Astros, Seattle Mariners, Milwaukee Brewers and Oakland Athletics. Toro hasn’t produced much in the big leagues — slashing .220/.285/.353 with 34 home runs and 134 RBIs in 365 career games played — but was once a highly-regarded prospect who dominated the minor leagues during certain stretches.
Toro can play all over the infield, spending time at first base (13 games), second base (123 games) and third base (145 games) since 2020.
The Red Sox needed to add infield depth at some point, as Kristian Campbell currently is the likeliest option to take over at second base despite having yet to appear in MLB. David Hamilton, Vaughn Grissom, Romy González, non-roster invitee Nate Eaton and fellow top prospect Marcelo Mayer could also push for that spot.
