Lynn has an eye for talent
Boston Red Sox great Fred Lynn knows what to look for in a baseball player.
After all, he put together his own tremendous MLB career and spent plenty of time playing alongside elite-level talent as well.
Lynn sees something special in Alex Bregman, who reportedly joined the Red Sox late Wednesday night by agreeing to a three-year, $120 million contract with two opt-out clauses. Lynn even compared Bregman to a somewhat obscure Red Sox Hall of Famer — at least for this generation of Boston fans.
“Alex reminds me of my teammate, Rico Petrocelli,” Lynn posted on the X platform Thursday. “Same stance and short compact swing that should work well in Fenway. Looking forward to the season.”
Petrocelli played all 13 seasons of his MLB career with the Red Sox from 1963-1976 and was fan favorite in Boston. The two-time All-Star shortstop, who moved to third base later in his career, accumulated 210 home runs and 773 RBIs with a .251 batting average over that span. He was inducted into the team’s Hall of Fame in 1997.
Bregman already is closing in on those numbers after just nine MLB seasons, all of which were spent with the Houston Astros. Like Petrocelli, Bregman is a two-time All-Star and has compiled a .272 batting average with 191 home runs and 663 RBIs in his career.
Bregman will also look to take advantage of the hitter-friendly confines of Fenway Park, much like Petrocelli did. Bregman showed he could already do that with the Astros, hitting .375 with seven homers and 15 RBIs in 21 regular-season games at Fenway.
Bregman will try to do something Petrocelli never did with the Red Sox and something the 30-year-old already accomplished twice with the Astros. And winning a World Series would make Bregman beloved in Boston, just like how Petrocelli captivated fans.
