Alex Cora on Tuesday stressed there’s no tension brewing in the Red Sox clubhouse between two of Boston’s best players.
Some might have thought otherwise Monday when Rafael Devers bluntly stated his desire to stay at third base, the position Alex Bregman excelled at over nine seasons with the Houston Astros. One day later, Boston’s manager was asked if he sensed any awkwardness growing between the pair of star infielders.
“It didn’t look that way yesterday at the house, I’ll tell you,” Cora told reporters in Fort Myers, Fla., as seen on NESN. “They were talking for like 45 minutes. Things like this happen. Obviously, we play in this market and it’s big. Guys have their ideas. They’re proud and they say the things that they do. But like I said yesterday, it’s not about Alex or Raffy or AC. It’s about the Boston Red Sox.”
While Devers didn’t mince words when asked about his position preference, he never insinuated he had any sort of problem with Bregman. Quite the contrary, as the three-time All-Star referred to his new Red Sox teammate as a “great guy” and a “great addition” to the roster.
As for lineup construction, Cora is going to let spring training play out before he makes any firm decisions. And once he does, Bregman and Devers both will need to buy in for the sake of the team.
