Major League Baseball on Tuesday learned who will be the most sought-after player in free agency following the 2025 season.
That distinction belongs to Vladimir Guerrero Jr., who did not reach an agreement with the Toronto Blue Jays on a contract extension by Monday night. Guerrero has no plans to negotiate a potential extension in-season, so the stage is set for the superstar slugger to enter the open market come November.
Shortly after Guerrero provided the update from Blue Jays spring training, the New York Post’s Jon Heyman identified the “early favorites” to sign the four-time All-Star this winter. Heyman listed the Boston Red Sox at No. 1, followed by the New York Mets and the New York Yankees, respectively.
The Red Sox taking the top spot on Heyman’s list should not have come as a surprise. A report earlier in the offseason claimed Guerrero “would love” to take his talents to Boston if he left Toronto, and Heyman himself last month indicated the Red Sox would have a “good shot” at landing the 25-year-old if he hit free agency.
That said, Boston fans shouldn’t immediately start making customized Guerrero Red Sox jerseys. The son of the Baseball Hall of Famer on Tuesday indicated he still could re-sign with Toronto in free agency and wants to be a Blue Jay “for life.” Many other clubs surely will court Guerrero next offseason, too.

But there’s usually fire where there’s smoke, and a significant helping of Red Sox-Guerrero rumors this winter suggested Boston might have a better chance than most to land the game-changing first baseman.
