Alex Bregman solidified a substantial offseason for the Boston Red Sox when he signed a three-year deal with the ballclub.

His market certainly had other suitors before a final offer at the buzzer from the Red Sox sealed the deal to bring Bregman to Boston. The All-Star infielder revealed which team in the American League he would have joined if his current situation hadn’t come to be.

“We thought we were going to be in Detroit the entire time, honestly,” Bregman shared on “Foul Territory” Wednesday. “At the last second, Boston kind of came in.”

The Tigers would have certainly made sense. They’re another team that could’ve used a right-handed bat. They’re on the verge of true contention after they pushed the Cleveland Guardians to Game 5 in the 2024 American League Division Series. Bregman also could have reunited with his ex-Houston Astros manager A.J. Hinch. Instead, he joined his old bench coach in Red Sox manager Alex Cora.

“It was crazy,” Bregman said. “Met with a lot of teams. Honestly, everything happened in the last 30 minutes. It was kind of rapid fire.”
