UPDATE 4:30 p.m. ET: The Bruins announced Brad Marchand is “unlikely to return” to the game with an upper-body injury.
The Boston Bruins faced a less-than-ideal scenario Saturday afternoon when they saw their captain Brad Marchand assisted off in their game against the Pittsburgh Penguins.
That happened due to an awkward collision along the boards to the 36-year-old forward.
The Bruins became shorthanded up front after Marchand got tangled up with Penguins defenseman Pierre-Olivier Joseph at 14:08 of the first period.
Marchand was skating into the corner to retrieve the puck when Joseph got his stick into Marchand’s left skate, causing the Halifax, Nova Scotia native to lose his footing. Joseph, already committed to making the hit, tried to pull up, but Marchand fell awkwardly head first into the boards.

After being down on the ice for several minutes, Marchand was assisted off the ice down the tunnel to the locker room. The Bruins have not made an official announcement regarding Marchand’s status for the rest of the game.
Marchand had logged just 2:18 of ice time across three shifts before exiting. The Bruins were on the power play when the injury occurred. He has 21 goals and 47 points across 60 games for Boston this season.
Mason Lohrei lit the lamp with his fourth goal of the season to give Boston a 2-0 lead. David Pastrnak opened the scoring just 1:32 into the game with his 32nd goal of the season, extending his point streak to 17 games.
