Can Northeastern’s Dream Hockey East Run Continue?

Northeastern shocked the Hockey East world last weekend and hopes to continue its run at TD Garden.

The Huskies shocked No. 1 Boston College when they beat the Eagles, 3-1, at Conte Forum last Saturday. Jerry Keefe’s side became the first No. 9 seed to make the men’s Hockey East semifinal. Northeastern will play the second-seeded Maine Black Bears on Thursday.

NESN’s Adam Pellerin and George Balekji and spoke with Eric Gallanty on “The Hockey Hub” podcast. The Hockey East broadcaster explained what made Northeastern successful against Boston College as the Huskies are two wins away from the title.

“That physical play really stood out. I think what really stood out in that BC game was the blocked shots,” Gallanty said. “They blocked 20 shots against BC. They have 47 blocked shots in two playoff games. They really committed to the structure. That’s where you talk about the nature of the motivation Northeastern had. It was how they committed to their game plan.

“… We talk about faceoffs sometimes. I think sometimes it’s a valid stat. Sometimes, it’s a touch overrated. But Northeastern’s really good on the faceoff. Jack Williams takes a lot of them. Ryan McGuire takes a lot of them. … Northeastern has the experience of winning in TD Garden. That is a place that can be an advantage for them, as well.”

UConn and Boston University kick off the Hockey East semifinal Thursday at 4 p.m. ET. The Northeastern-Maine matchup follows at 7:30 p.m. You can watch both games on NESN+ and NESN 360. The Hockey East championship game is Friday.
