Meet the new (Boston Celtics) boss, the same as the old boss.
Well, not technically, of course, but the man who has reportedly agreed to buy the Celtics for a record-breaking $6.1 billion, has one thing very much in common with the people he’s buying the team from: he’s a fan, too.
William Chisholm, according to multiple reports is the man making the major investment, acquiring the historic franchise from the current ownership group led by the Grousbeck family.
Current Celtics lead owner/governor Wyc Grousbeck is a Worcester, Mass., native who grew up rooting for the Celtics. Fans wanting a fellow Celtics fan to buy the team will be happy to know Chisholm is from Georgetown, Mass., and went to college at Dartmouth. His passion for the C’s apparently runs even deeper than the bottom line, too.
“According to a person close to Chisholm,” The Boston Globe’s Adam Himmelsbach wrote Thursday, “(Chisholm) is a lifelong Celtics fan with an ‘encyclopedic knowledge’ of the team. Although Symphony Technology Group is based in California, Chisholm owns a home on Nantucket, and the source said that Chisholm was intending to buy a home in Boston if he was awarded the team.”

Grousbeck essentially confirmed as much in his statement upon official announcement.
“Bill is a terrific person and a true Celtics fan, born and raised here in the Boston area,” Grousbeck said in a statement. “His love for the team and the city of Boston, along with his chemistry with the rest of the Celtics leadership, make him a natural choice to be the next governor and controlling owner of this team. I know he appreciates the importance of the Celtics and burns with a passion to win on the court while being totally committed to the community.”
Ultimately, it doesn’t really matter where the owner came from or for whom he rooted, especially if he’s willing to fork over $6.1 billion to buy the team. That being said, Celtics fans should take solace in the fact that in addition to putting an astronomical monetary value on the organization, the man leading a new ownership group considers himself a fan.
