The Red Sox didn’t only gain an impactful bat and a sure-handed glove when they signed Alex Bregman.

Boston added a tremendous leader as well.

Bregman went out of his way to be a mentor for Boston upon joining the storied organization. The two-time World Series champion had his spring training locker set up right next to the Red Sox’s top prospects, and he even took a rare Florida road trip to spend more time with those talented up-and-comers.

The star infielder did more for those youngsters than give sage advice and lead by example, though. In a column published Friday, ESPN’s Jeff Passan noted how “the best thing he heard all spring” about Boston was Bregman buying new suits for Roman Anthony, Kristian Campbell, Marcelo Mayer and other prospects.

“It’s the sickest thing ever,” Mayer said, per Passan.

Passan thought Bregman purchasing those new threads went beyond a kind gesture. The trusted MLB insider viewed the move as a sign that Bregman “sees himself in Boston for the long haul.”

While Bregman can opt out of his Red Sox contract after either of the next two seasons, it’s easy to see a scenario where the two-time All-Star falls in love with Boston and doesn’t covet a move. Those top prospects, who are poised to be great big leaguers, certainly could help facilitate that mindset.
